英國每日郵報報導，澳洲雪梨特種部隊與警察以攻擊步槍、震撼彈攻堅，解除人質危機時，造成3人死亡，1人是槍手莫尼斯，2人是人質。

自稱是「精神治療師」的莫尼斯，被控共謀殺害前妻，且面對多起性侵罪名。他因寫仇恨信給戰死於阿富汗澳洲軍人的家屬，痛罵這些軍人是豬，被判需從事社區服務300小時。

莫尼斯試圖在高等法院推翻這些罪名，本月12日遭駁回後，15日發生他在雪梨瑞士蓮巧克力咖啡館劫持人質事件。
